The need for clinical research to optimise for the next serious infectious disease outbreak

There are several examples of emerging outbreak of pathogens (mostly of viral origin) across the globe, that cause significant harm to the individual and to society. Modalities to prevent these outbreaks’ (re)occurrence is urgently needed, and the National Academies of Sciences issued a report in 2017, outlining steps required to better prepare the world against these public health treats.

In this session, Prof. Cliff Lane, clinical director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Prof Jim Neaton, University of Minnesota, will share their experiences and lessons learned on this topic in relation to the large Ebola outbreak in Western Africa.

Jens Lundgren, MD, DMSc, Professor of infectious diseases and a practicing infectious disease specialist. Director of CHIP – Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections. Heads PERSIMUNE (Centre of Excellence for Personalised Medicine
of Infectious Complications in Immune Deficiency).
H. Clifford Lane, M.D., serves as the NIAID Deputy Director for Clinical Research and Special Projects. Dr. Lane’s responsibilities include directing the activities of the Division of Clinical Research, which supports and coordinates both intramural and extramural research involving human volunteers.

James D. Neaton, PhD, leads the large INSIGHT network that conducts international trials of HIV and influenza treatments and conducts observational studies of C. difficile infection and influenza. Also leads research on Ebola in West Africa, that includes clinical trials of vaccines and treatments, and a large cohort study of Ebola survivors and their close contacts.
